| The Chase (Star Trek: The Next Generation) |
I was reading an interesting article in Space.com about astronomer
Mauri Valtonen from the
University of Turku in Finland and his research on stars that could be siblings to our sun thus opening the way for similar planets and conditions that could have life like ours here on Earth. This research reminds me of an episode of Star Trek The Next Generation entitled
The Chase, in which Professor Galen approaches Capt. Picard and asks him to complete research in a topic unknown to Picard. After Galen is killed, the Enterprise is off on a mystery hunt that involves the Klingons, Cardassians, Romulans, all seek the same answers as Prof. Galen, and soon find out that we are all not so different after all. The episode touches on some of the ideas of Prof. Valtonen and the hypothesis of
Panspermia. The Star Trek episode differs slightly from Panspermia in that it is addressing the origins of life where Panspermia is explaining how life can be spread throughout the Universe.
